Maori Government?
All this business in Gisborne with Maori "police" demanding money from business owners is just thuggery. (I should point out that "police" terminology is what has been reported by moteliers and the media. The Maori Government call them "security officers".)
You see, these "police" are representitives of the Maori Government of New Zealand. Sue Nikora, who is the Prime Minister of the Maori Government, claims that the Treaty of Waitangi gives her the right to have a separate Government.
Obviously, she has never actually read the Treaty. Clause 1 in both Maori and English versions of the Treaty cede Soverignty / Government to the Crown.
Clause 2 of the Treaty gives Maori the right to own their property (Tino Rangitiri Tanga translates to "Cheiftainship") - i.e. not to have it confiscated. Interestingly, this clause omits any mention of Cheiftainship over Maori people, in both the English and Maori versions.
Clause 3 of the Treaty is the most enlightened. It gave Maori the rights of British citizens. Among these was to have the right of protection from people using force to remove money from you unfairly.
So, the Treaty makes us all equal before the law. So congratulations to the Police for arresting these "police" and their organiser.
I only have one question - if I was an MP I would be asking a written question of the Minister of Maori Affairs. How much money has been granted to Te Awa Mapara Trust by Te Puni Kokiri in each year since 1999? It would be interesting to find out how much money Sue Nikora's trust has recieved.

Although I don't agree with what's been happening in Gisborne In reply to :'Anonymous'- In regard to your post about "Many Maori signing the treaty with an x and therefore making it 'void'". Before, you make such a remark again it might pay to search your heart and figure out if you're racist or just ignorant. Maori didn't write, like Europeans. They couldn't even read English. It certainly didn't make them dumb to only be able to mark an x and besides, THOSE ARE OUR CHIEFS you are talking about. I suggest to you the next time you post a comment like that EDUCATE YOURSELF FIRST!!

Is this really movement from Tangata Whenua of the Iwi they represent, or is the representation unregistered and moving like a spirit on the wind (do they kick in doors,or throw people in them). Security Officers are registered, check it. Ask the Iwi for consultation, any relationships to these acts should be taken to the Kaumatua of the area. Simple, Tikanga Process - Iwi Plan of area, business Development activities and incentives. Check Inland Revenue Info. for funding, heck if your Maori yourself take some time to ask for help if the differences are too political to address - safety first. People / tangata whenua like attention, it's part of tikanga, but your words sound more like a reflection of witnessed violence. I don't condone that, but you may have seen just how pro-active we become if the concern is protection, participation and partnership ie. springboks, foreshore and seabed.
Have faith, kia kaha - remarks of ignorance are only times for some to think more deeply of their own, may be surprised perhaps they don't sit on the paepae.

Are you serious? First of all, the NZ GOVT speaks for all new zealanders & the tangata whenua. 2nd the so called 'MAori GOVT^" is just a group of maori activist trying to take back our land our our issues in to thier own hands.
Leave it with the NZ GOVt, if you wish to have any concerns relating towards Maori people please write a letter or email Parekura Horomia (The Minister of MAroi Affairs) please resist the temptation of joinig in the "Maori Govermenbt" which is a load of Crap.

sue if u say you are wot you are where did you get those rights from your people i dnt think so why do we need a primeminister this is a copy cat system cant maori think out side the square and further more you are only wana be prime minister from down there where you belong so dnt come up to ngapuhi taranaki hauraki kaipara areas cause we have our own system with out a prime minister we have done a backgroung check on you and find you owe alot of people answers to alot of question as well as money, you need to get authority from all your people and kaumatua b4 anyone should agree with any ideas you have you are not reconized in the u.n or have overseas conection do you have any proof on paper of the achivements that you have done and not just the korero of wot you did in gisbourn and not the mahi that every one else has done ie erus mahi dans mahi mars mahi akanihi mahi mikes mahi rita mahi travis mahi ect its these peoples wrks that you are quick to claim as your work typical. You got off your case cause of the connection that these people have and the tikanga that they use to challege the nz government in england and all other countrys so stay where you come from and dnt use the rights of your tane to say gives you a foot in each rohe or you will be wacked like the rest that abuse the mahi est 1835
