Anti-Whaling Nations Black Pot

Much is being made by our PM about Japan's enlisting of nations to help it win votes in the International Whaling Commission.

But, did you know that six anti-whaling nations - Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Luxembourg - are all landlocked? What interest have these nations in the Whaling industry?

  • New Zealand has no nuclear weapons. Doesn't mean we're not interested in how they're handled by others.

  • Yes, NZ has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the IAEA is a UN Organisation - so we have to monitor Nuclear Technology use in New Zealand and abroad.

Those six nations joining the IWC (which regulates Whaling) makes as much sense as NZ joining a commission to manage fishing in European freshwater lakes.

  • Perhaps they're simply concerned about us humans wiping out yet another species for no good reason?

  • If they're so concerned they should dispatch some naval vessels to protect the whales.
