Commenting on this Blog
Okay, I should explain why I asked someone to stop posting comments on this blog.
'Strong-Light' posted a comment on my recent post about why I thought Israel was justified in attacking Hizbollah in Lebanon. He didn't understand my post and accused me of not supporting Israel's right of self-defence, but supporting bombing Lebanon to ensure political popularity for the governing party in Israel.
He then continued to (either maliciously, or ignorantly) place taunting comments not related to the thesis of my arguement. If 'Strong-Light' commented why I was wrong and why Israel was not right to attack Hizbollah targets in Lebanon I would've been happy to take those comments on board - instead, he called my analogy "counter-factual" and "disingenous". Not harsh words, but they code for "You are a Liar".
'Strong Light' had also previously accused me of using "'womens rights' only when it provides [ME] with a mechanism to make another dig at Maori" - in other words, called me both sexist and racist.
I pay for the hosting and bandwidth on this site - I post to this blog for various reasons - because I have a bee in my bonnet, or because I want people I know what is happening in my life, or because I've found something I want to share. Constructive comments are always welcome.
I don't pay for this blog to be insulted - and if you don't like it, you can click "Next Blog" and go somewhere else.

You assume stronglight is a man.... Do you not think a woman is capable of such argument?

Because I'm an evil member of the patriarchy overlord class.
Or more accurately, because I have no idea about stronglights gender - I used the male pronoun because it's the 'default' one.

i have sympathy for wanting to keep your blog the way you want it. if you pay for it you should have some control. however, i think that you are dealing poorly with whatsername's comments. for a couple of reasons. mostly because i think she was actually trying to challenge you about some of your assumptions. this challenge was not to call you a liar. but to suggest that you could think more critically about what you say. and on the haka thing... i think she was saying that it people stick up for women when it doesn't impact on the way *they* do things. and that for many new zealand men that time is when it puts down something other than 'men'. ethnic minorities are a rather obvious target. the front page of the dompost ran three (maybe more i can't remember off the top of my head) stories today where Maori were painted in a negative light. so while you may not be a racist in the sense of 'personally mediated' racism, by buying into the arguments that make sweeping statements about maori culture and the place of women, you are in fact supporting the more structural, institutional, racism. maybe not intentionally. disingenously perhaps. but on some level you are putting another group down to support the status of the dominant group.
also i'm anonymous not because i don't want to be challenged myself but because my blog is about me and not about any of this. if you bann me i will promise not to post any more comments.

I take your point, but Stronglight was not being constructive. Anon, you on the other hand are being constructive so are welcome back anytime. (Although I disagree with your assertion.)
I love my assumptions to be challenged - my FIL does it all the time on this blog, I respect him for that. My favourite blog is Spans, (2nd fav after my wifes) becuase she puts her view out there without the pomposity I find with some other left-wing bloggers.
So, let us all not resort to "you're wrong because you are a a heartless, racist, misognyst, right-wing prick" or some varient thereon. Okay?
