Environmental Vandals
The fire on the Nisshin Maru shows one thing - If Sea Shepherd had rammed and sunk a Japanese whaling ship there would have beena major environmental catastrophe.
Are Sea Shepherd really willing to destoy a pristine Antartic environment to save a few whales?

Michael, I support Sea Shepherd. At least they have the guts to match the rhetoric with action and by action I mean they put themselves on the line rather than wait for politicos to get their act togeather. Sea Shepherd never tried to ram and sink the factory ship and stated that they didn't intend to. Sure they would like to damage the Japanese equipment to make it inoperative but they know the conditions there and the risks and know the bad media they would get if they caused a major oil spill. That would ruin their conservation credentials. Now on the other hand the Japanese don't care again apart from trying to curry a favourable press with false statements. Their factory ship is a heap of rubbish and a time bomb. I know who the eco-terrorists are and they bribe and bully their way around the world all in the name of a traditional right. Strange thing is that they never had a whale factory ship before the 1980's!

How We Destroyed the Nisshin Maru
Conspiracy Theories on How Sea Shepherd Destroyed the Nisshin Maru
The Sea Shepherd crews did not cause the fire that destroyed the mother ship of the Japanese whaling fleet. The last thing we would have wanted to do was sink a floating factory full of oil and chemicals in the pristine waters of the Antarctic ecosystem.
Yes, we intimidated them and harassed them and disrupted their whaling activities, but we did not damage them. The whaler Kaiko Maru did ram the Robert Hunter and did cause damage to the Sea Shepherd ship.
Sea Shepherd has never deployed a tactic that has had the potential to cause injury or death to another human being and this campaign was no different.
Of course, it was just a matter of time before Sea Shepherd would be blamed for the fire that destroyed the Nisshin Maru and put an end to Japanese whaling operations in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary this year.
The Sea Shepherd ships were about 1,000 miles from the Japanese whaling fleet when the fire erupted in the factory area of the Nisshin Maru. Despite this there are already accusatory rumors that it was Sea Shepherd activists who destroyed the ship.
It makes for good drama, but there is no truth to the rumors.
However, this has not stopped the conspiracy theorists from creating the scenarios that demonstrate how Sea Shepherd attacked and destroyed the Nisshin Maru.

Let's be clear - I'm not blaming Sea Shepherd for the fire. I'm just saying their ramming tactics have the potential to sink a ship - either their own or a whaling ship.
And we've all heard in the last few days how that could destroy a large part of the environment.
And as for their statement: "Sea Shepherd has never deployed a tactic that has had the potential to cause injury or death to another human being" Ramming another ship hard enough to disable it can cause injury or death.

People like those on board SeaShepherd actually do the environmental movement a disservice, IMO.
By their actions they confirm the myth that environmentalists are all bearded, kaftan wearing hippies with several screws loose.
No-one sane needs these guys ramming whaling ships to know that whaling is wrong. They already have public opinion on their side.
