From this weeks Trans Tasman Newsletter

Overlooked because of the MPs scorecards:

"Every Labour speech in the House on the [Electoral Finance] Bill is dominated by yet another rant about the religious sect.

"The idea seems to be to drape the Bill in some sort of moral authority. In fact, it is doing the opposite. A law which relies for its principal justification on the vilification of a marginal group – The Exclusive Brethren – can have little moral authority. It positively invites civil disobedience."

Couldn't have said it better.

  • Bleet bleet vilification of the brethren blah blah !! .

What a load of bleeting codswallop , any vilification has been done by the Exclusive Brethren by themselves .Just as they have also done in Australia !! funny that isnt it both places .Anyone make them be so deceitful ? . No they decided to be that way all by themselves .

  • If you ask anyone in the National Party they generally blame the Brethern for losing them election - Firstly by Don Brash not being completely upfront about the links when first questioned, secondly by linking National with a fringe ultra-conservative church group that turned off middle NZers.

My view is there is a lot of electoral law that needs tidying up - but third party advertisements is not one of them. The only thing is that they need to be clear about who is behind them, so people can be aware of any historical agenda.
